Family wake-up call

With our energizing five-minute morning workout, you and your crew will be ready to take on the world.

Making time for exercise first thing in the morning – even just a few minutes of activity – can start your day off on the right foot. And this five-minute routine is a great way for parents to be active with their kids. It’s also quick enough to fit into busy schedules.

“Short bursts of intense exercise can actually boost metabolism for the entire day more effectively than longer, slow-and-steady workouts,” says Healthy Lifestyles coach Jessica Hunter.

To keep the workout fun, Hunter suggests setting it up as a circuit for you and your kids, moving from room to room, if possible. And don’t forget to turn up the music!

You can experiment with different exercises to find what works best for your children, their activity levels and the space available in your home. Here are five to get you started:

If boredom sets in, try new and more challenging activities. You can also take them outside if the weather allows. Ongoing competitions, where you track “individual standings” on your refrigerator door, are also a great way to keep the momentum going – especially with older children who like to win. And if you need a break from the circuit, just dance!

Remember to stretch when you’re done. While you stretch, have everyone set a positive goal for the day.
